In her book "Big Magic," Elizabeth Gilbert presents the idea that inspiration is a form of energy, and when it's ready to be born, it will find whoever is willing to receive it. If that person isn't ready, it moves on. Either give it your best shot, or prepare to see it taken up by someone else. This was one of those ideas.

When I found my visual signature consisting of swooshes of color that travel throughout my canvases, I was eager to see all the different forms it could take. I’ve had it appear like cloud iridescence in skies, affection blown into the air and candle flames. Their flowy nature led me to believe that my signature swoosh of colors could easily take the form of water. It made perfect sense in my head. I could see the image of a waterfall taking form and I was convinced this was big magic that had come to me, asking me to bring it to life.

This was back in 2021. When I first tried to render this vision on canvas, it fell short, at least in my eyes. Looking back, I can see that I was close. I just didn't yet know the extra touches needed to give it the emotional impact I felt it could have.

With time, my style evolved, bringing more detail and rendered environments to my canvases. Even as I worked on other paintings, this idea of colorful waterfalls would not leave me. So I kept my eye out for any imagery that might lend itself to becoming the painting I held in my heart.

Then in 2025, the same year I found myself spiraling after losing my job in animation, the final pieces needed to make this long-held idea manifest, finally came to me. That is when Colorfall was born.

The painting serves as a reminder that although the forest of our lives can feel dark and unknown at times, there is always a supportive source of energy there for us if we are willing and patient enough to find it. Creating this work during one of the most challenging times in my life helped me feel like everything would be all right. That I was on the right track. This idea could have floated off to someone else in the four years since it first came to me. Instead, it waited until I needed it most. 

My intention was always to create not just one painting, but a series with this waterfall motif. In my world, big magic also requires astrological magic, which has its own timeline. I worked with Jupiter, the great benefic, while it was still exalted in Cancer this past June, and consecrated several handmade papers and canvases under a highly auspicious alignment that only comes around once every twelve years. One of my most fortuitous workings to date.

This collection is built on a simple premise: abundance was never something you have to earn. It's already running, quietly and continuously, beneath the surface of things. Most people never see it. Not because it isn't there, but because they haven't been shown how to look.
